Circulating on The Plainsman social media pages recently was an opinion piece from the editorial board addressing the recent abortion legislation in Texas (legislation which I admit has some significant problems). The editorial lamented the Texas decision and concluded with a plea for Alabamians not to allow a similar bill to pass in our state. As a grateful member of the Auburn Family, I’d like to respond, briefly and respectfully, though firmly in opposition to the sentiment expressed in the editorial.

With the new fall semester back in full swing, on behalf of the Office of Health Promotion & Wellness Services, I would like to introduce myself and some of our programs. My name is Judith White and I am the Coordinator for Survivor Advocacy and Violence Prevention. My job is two-fold, in that it addresses both advocacy and prevention. I coordinate the Safe Harbor program and Green Dot bystander intervention trainings and overviews.

On Sept. 1, Texas enacted the most restrictive abortion law in the nation. The law — dubbed by its supporters as the “heartbeat bill” — bans a woman's constitutional right to abortion as soon as cardiac activity can be detected in the embryo.

A bit more than a week ago, I sent the following message to leaders of the Auburn University administration, University Senate, Coach Bryan Harsin and Athletics Director Allen Greene:

Fall semester is here, and while we are beginning this fall in a better position than last year — testing is widely available, the medical community has learned how to better treat COVID patients and personal protective equipment is no longer in short supply — the Delta variant continues to spread rapidly.

This is in response to the Plainsman’s July column titled “Urbanization of Auburn leaving behind some community members.“ As a former resident, I write because I disagree that urbanization (or urbanism, as its advocates prefer) is a bogeyman that implies negatives like “gentrification” — to the contrary, urbanism and its principles offer a path to sustainability and inclusion, and I believe Auburn should embrace them.

Welcome back to the Loveliest Village on the Plains. To the freshmen, welcome to your new home and — perhaps to some of the sophomores as well — welcome, for the first time, to a normal college experience.

Only a few months have passed since Gov. Kay Ivey signed into law the sex education bill, HB385, recognizing elementary and incomplete reforms to sex education at public K-12 schools across the state of Alabama.

Dear Auburn City Schools,

After four years of moving up the ranks together, we sat down to reflect on our time at The Auburn Plainsman. This 31-minute conversation — that was cut down for readability purposes — goes out to everyone who came before us and everyone we’ll be leaving behind. Thank you for giving us this once-in-a-lifetime experience.

In February, the Auburn Board of Trustees announced that two residence halls in The Village would be renamed. Eagle Hall will be renamed in honor of Josetta Matthews, the first Black student to graduate from Auburn — earning a master’s degree in 1966, and a doctorate in 1975, both in education — and the first Black faculty member.

Editor's Note: An earlier version of this editorial stated that there were currently over 500,000 cases and almost 50,000 hospitalizations in Alabama. This number reflects total cases and hospitalizations in the state since the pandemic began, and the statistic has since been updated. We apologize to our readers for this inaccuracy.
