Race for the Ugliest Shoe

Bloomberg View believes that there is currently a “race for the ugliest shoe” [1].

Yet, this term summarizes the mission of the fashion industry as a whole. The days of being mocked for wearing childish or unflattering material such as Velcro and opaque, plastic material is no longer taboo. Rather, they are what the cool kids wear.

Times are changing in the fashion industry. Since low cut jeans that sit at the hips and multi-colored rhinestone covered jeans did not work out as a lasting trend in the early 2000s, there is currently a race to see who will design the landmark staple for the next decade. Bringing back pieces from the 1970s tend to resonate with one branch of the consumer (think Free People) yet the 80s outdoorsman look thrives with others (Patagonia anyone?).

Instead of finding the holy grail fashion staple designers have come to a consensus that the trends going forward will go by this simple motto: anything goes.

Self-expression has never been more acceptable ranging from street style to high fashion. For example, the polar opposite markets of fashion were combined on the Spring 2018 runway. Balenciaga incorporated creations of platform croc inspired shoes [2] into their collection. What is even crazier than the fact that this daring shoe made its way into the respected territory of high fashion.

That brings us back to the race for the ugliest shoe. Since all styles, cuts, and trends are popular (like I said, anything goes), it is almost as if the industry is going full throttle creativity. Let your true style shine this upcoming season and wear whatever, it is quite literally what is in style.
