A spirit that is not afraid

Auburn champions in Iron Bowl of soccer

The No. 8 Auburn Tigers were victorious Thursday night in Tuscaloosa, defeating the Alabama Crimson Tide in overtime. Freshman Taylor Troutman was the hero in the 103rd minute, sending a header to the back of Alabama's net for a 2-1 win.

"This team just finds a way," said head coach Karen Hoppa. "I didn't think we played as well as we did last weekend, but that's credit to Alabama. They came out in the second half with guns blazing."

The Tigers wasted no time getting on the scoreboard, with a 2nd minute goal by senior Kala Faulkner. Alabama responded in the 65th minute to tie the match at one, and a hard defense from keeper Sarah Le Beau held the tie and forced overtime.

"We knew coming in that this game was going to be tough," Le Beau said. "We had to come in, stay focused and composed. Auburn and Alabama is the biggest rivalry of all. We just fought hard and got the win."

With the win Auburn advances to 11-1-0 overall and 4-1-0 in SEC play. The Tigers will travel to Columbia, South Carolina, next week for a matchup between the top two teams of the SEC. First kick is set for 6 p.m. and will be televised on the SEC Network.
