Former Auburn assistant football coach Paul Davis dies

Longtime Auburn assistant football coach Paul Davis died Tuesday at the age of 87.

Davis was the defensive coordinator and assistant head coach under Shug Jordan from 1967-75, an assistant for Doug Barfield from 1975-80 and a member of Pat Dye's staff from 1987-90.

In his 17 years at Auburn, Davis was part of coaching staffs that produced seven All-Americans and went to nine bowl games.

Born Feb. 3, 1922, Davis was a native of Knoxville, Tenn., and graduated from Ole Miss in 1947. He also served four years in the U.S. Army during World War II.

Davis is preceded by his wife, two children and two grandchildren. Memorial services will be Saturday, April 4 at 2 p.m. at Jeffcoat-Trant Funeral Home in Opelika, with visitation beginning at 1 p.m.
