New Changes Come to Facebook

Tired of Facebook constantly changing? Well, Facebook has changed its home page again. This time, they say, to make it easier than ever to connect with friends and find out what they are up to.

According to their Web site, friend's posts are streamed in real-time and give more control over what a user will see. A user's profile and home page will still contain the same amount of information, but the format is slightly different.

Drew Krenkel, a junior in civil engineering, has had a Facebook account for a couple of years and said he checks his profile about once a day. He doesn't like that Facebook constantly changes, although he thinks it's fairly easy to navigate.

"I'm just used to how it usually is," said Krenkel.

The home page consists of three new aspects: filters, stream, and publisher.

The filters allow users to remain updated on what their friends are posting. Users can filter by friend's list, which enables them to select friends they want to receive more information about, or by selecting a filter by applications, like photos, links, or groups.

The stream allows users to see posts from friends in real-time. These posts are up to date and allow the user to control which friend's posts will appear.

The publisher allows users to publish items such as photos, status updates and notes on the stream. Posts by the user will appear both on the user's profile as well as friend's home pages. The publisher also provides users with an opportunity to share feedback on content such as photos, notes and wall posts into the stream. Users will have one stream on the wall of a user's profile and one stream on their home page that will show conversations between the user and their friends.

Courtney McArthur, a freshman in marketing doesn't like that Facebook seems to be changing frequently and thinks they should leave it alone.

"It's annoying because you get used to how it is, and then it just changes and you have to get used to it again and again and again," said McArthur.

She has had a Facebook account for three years and checks her profile at least once a day. As far as navigating around the site, McArthur believes it to be easy and user-friendly and it usually takes her a day or two to adjust to the new changes.

Brittany Rose, a freshman in early childhood education has had a Facebook account for three years and said she checks it hourly.

She dislikes how Facebook changes continually and finds it hard to get used to each time it does change.

"I didn't go over to the 'new' Facebook until they actually changed it and that took a couple of weeks," said Rose.

Rose said her favorite part about Facebook is looking at pictures of her friends and her least favorite aspect is the 'like' application, which allows the user to show what parts of Facebook they like.

Facebook strives to improve its Web site and as always, it wants to hear from its users and encourage them to send feedback about any aspect of the site so they can continue to make changes. For any problems with an account, check out the help page at www.facebook.com/help.php which provides the answers to all aspects of the site.
