Top-seeded Auburn falls to Georgia in 2009 Southern Championship

The Auburn equestrian team traveled to Bishop, Ga., last weekend to compete in the 2009 Southern Equestrian Championships.

The top-seeded Auburn team lost to the No. 2 seed Georgia team 15-5 Saturday.

Georgia defeated Auburn 6-4 in Hunt Seat and 9-1 in Western.

"Final scores weren't close, but the rides were," said Auburn head coach Greg Williams. "We had a lot of really good rides today. We'll get a week and a half of hard work in and go to nationals."

Georgia won Hunt Seat Equitation over Fences 3-2.

Auburn's Grace Socha won MVP honors by beating Georgia's Kelley Cowperthwait 164-160.

Auburn's Maggie McAlary also defeated Georgia's Emma Lipman 160-143.

The Tiger's Rebecca Rifkin took co-MVP honors in Hunt Seat Equitation on the Flat.

Rifkin defeated Georgia's Katie Hagerty 166-162.

Maggie McAlary also defeated the Bulldog's Amy Klebesadel 163-154.

Georgia won Western Horsemanship 5-0 and Western Reining 4-1.

The Tiger's Paige Monfore defeated Hannah Dyer 140.5-135 for Auburn's only win in the Western competition.

"This was just a beautiful day all around," said Georgia head coach Meghan Boenig. "The weather was ideal, the riding conditions were terrific and the level of competition was extremely high on both sides."

Auburn competes again in the Varsity Equestrian National Championships in Waco, Texas, April 16-18.
