IFC Helps Protect Auburn's Hearts

Members of Auburn's Interfraternity Council shocked the Auburn Police Department when they presented the department with eight emergency defibrillators, April 7.

"Until now, no police cars were equipped with AEDs," said Tyler Sample, senior in building science and president of IFC. "The police are usually the first to the scene when there is an accident, but they have no way to help someone in an emergency until an EMT shows up."

IFC paid for the defibrillators with funds raised during Greek Week 2009.

Sample said the process of acquiring the defibrillators took so long because IFC had to work with the East Alabama Medical Center to acquire the thousand-dollar devices.

IFC was only able to acquire eight defibrillators, so the remaining money raised during Greek Week 2009, $19,000, was donated to the Boys and Girls Club of East Alabama.

"This was our first time doing something like this," Sample said. "We would like to make it more of a tradition and increase the number of AEDs we are able to give to the police department next year."

Representatives from IFC presented the devices to the police department during a ceremony at the police station.

Tom Stofer, captain of the Auburn Police Department, said the department usually does not encourage gift giving, but they were very grateful to receive the devices.

Sample said it was an honor to give the defibrillators to the department.

"We are excited to be able to give something like this to the police department," Sample said. "This is something that could possibly save someone's life. Should that happen, it would make the donation well worth it."
