Plenty Praise For Sigma Chi Derby Days

Lights flashed and music blared as those who donated to Sigma Chi skated for the Children's Miracle Network. The fraternity sponsored the event Tuesday evening to raise money for the charity.

"All proceeds that we collect go to the Children's Miracle Network," said Kris Knecht, president of Sigma Chi.

He said the money raised will specifically go to the Columbus Regional Hospital.

"We got to tour the facility at Columbus a few months ago," Knecht said.

He said the facilities were phenomenal.

"I'm very proud that we're able to contribute," Knecht said.

Members of Sigma Chi put a table up in front of the door to the Skate Center in Auburn.

People donated about $5 each to Sigma Chi to get into the building.

Last year, Sigma Chi raised $12,139.75 for Children's Miracle Network.

Knecht said he would like to see Derby Days not appear to be limited to Greeks--not just for the social aspect. He said he felt the Children's Miracle Network was an important cause.

This is just one of the many philanthropy events Sigma Chi hosts for this charity, said Bob Poole, junior in accounting.

"We sell T-shirts and make money off that and rent these places out and take money at the door," Poole said.

Poole said they encourage everyone in the fraternity to participate, though many participate in different ways. Some brothers help through organizing the events, while others, like him, help by taking donations at the door.

One of the skaters included Maggie Wedgworth who was the Alpha Gamma Delta Derby Days representative and a sophomore in accounting. She said she went to a lot of the Derby Days events last year and was eager to skate.

Derby Days will continue through Friday. Thursday night is the Derby Bowl, in which sororities participate in a powderpuff football game.

There will be an all day band party on Friday featuring an international band.

Derby Days is the final philanthropy event for the semester for Sigma Chi.
