Robert Bentley has won the Republican nomination for governor, defeating Bradley Byrne in Tuesday's Republican runoff. With 100 percent of precincts reporting, Bentley has 260,843 votes (56 percent) to Byrne's 204,388 (44 percent).
Bentley secured a spot in the runoff against Byrne by narrowly defeating Tim James for second place after a recount of the initial round of primary voting on June 1.
Bentley's victory brings an end to what had been a contentious Republican primary full of accusations and political mud-slinging.
Bentley, a retired dermatologist and a state representative, ran a campaign that stressed job creation, family values, and transparency and accountability in government.
Bentley also said during the campaign that if he was elected governor, he would not accept a salary until Alabama reached full employment.
In other election results, James Anderson has defeated Giles Perkins, securing the Democratic nomination for Attorney General with 60 percent of the vote.
Locally, with 100 percent of precincts reporting, Chris Hughes has defeated James Thrash, winning the Republican nomination for Lee County 37th Circuit Judge Place 2 with 61 percent of the vote.
With 62 percent of the vote, Mike Fellows has won the Republican nomination for Lee County Circuit Judge Place 3, defeating opponent Margaret Mayfield.
