Auburn students and faculty looking to learn or loiter in the L Building are out of luck as the location has been locked because of a leak.

A floor panel in the L Building, which houses parts of the College of Engineering and the Office of Information Technology, cracked after the soil beneath eroded away.

While the building was officially closed Tuesday afternoon, Greg Parsons, a University architect in the facilities division, said the closure should not last long.

"The superstructure of the building is intact," Parsons said. "Right now, we have a structural engineer looking at it and should be back open in the not too distant future."

Parsons said facilities administrators decided to close the L Building because they were concerned a portion of the wall or floor might continue to settle and overturn. At no point were the people or equipment housed in the building in danger.

"It turned out to be no big deal. It just happened abruptly," Parsons said.

Parts of the L Building should be open soon, if not today, Parsons said.
