Volleyball pounces to victory in weekend tournament

Auburn Volleyball won the C of C Classic this weekend, with a win over Oregon State Friday (set scores: 26-24, 25-20, 25-17), a win over College of Charleston Saturday (25-13, 25-10, 25-19), and a loss to Cincinnati later in the day (25-22, 18-25, 21-25, 25-19).

"I thought we put up a good fight against Cincinnati," said Liz Crouch, senior libero. "They just played extraordinarily well."

Crouch was named Most Valuable Player of the tournament.

"I feel pretty good about it," Crouch said. "You know, hard work pays off. But it's more of a team thing--anything I can do for the team."

Auburn trailed Oregon State at the beginning of each set, but was able to pull a win every time.

"I think against Oregon State we did a good job coming from behind," Crouch said. "It kind of instills a confidence in us that even if we are down and even if we are losing the game, we can still come back."

The Tigers led consistently in their second victory of the tournament against College of Charleston, tournament hosts.

Sarah Bullock, sophomore, led the Tigers in the first two games, recording a double-double in each game with 12 kills and 12 digs against Oregon State and 13 kills and 10 digs against College of Charleston.

Morgan Johns, sophomore outside hitter, led against Cincinnati with 15 kills.

Katherine Culwell, sophomore outside hitter, also landed her first double-double in the Cincinnati game, with 10 kills and 18 digs.

Other notable performances included match highs in two games by Crouch, with 20 digs against Oregon State and 18 digs against College of Charleston.

"I just think we're coming together as a team," said head coach Wade Benson. "Many different people contributed to winning this tournament."

Auburn's victory over Oregon State is remarkable because it marks the team's first win against a Pac-10 team.

"We made history in that area," Johns said.

The Tigers finished the tournament with a 9-3 record. They will play their first SEC game of the season against LSU on Friday.
