A man was stabbed multiple times early Saturday morning in front of St. Dunstan's Episcopal Church on East Magnolia Avenue in downtown Auburn. Eyewitnesses described the assailant as a Caucasian man in his late 40s.
The victim, whose name and current condition have not been released, was transported by helicopter to Columbus Regional Medical Center.
Auburn Police Capt. Tom Stofer added that the victim is not believed to be a student. Stofer also said police officers apprehended the suspect.
After arguing with the victim, the assailant walked away. Danny Kendrick, a witness to the crime, said the assailant then returned and attacked the victim in front of St. Dunstan's.
"It looks like he kind of hugs the other guy, but he stabs him," Kendrick said. "The guy across the street just fell over. You could tell he was bleeding."
The assailant crossed the street again and attempted to flee the scene. Kendrick and Drew Robertson, who also witnessed the attack, said bystanders followed the man and pointed him out to police officers, who apprehended him on College Street near Quixote's.
"He was like running and was like 'I didn't do nothing. It was self-defense,'" Robertson said. "(The police officer) went up with a nightstick and just clocked him in the knee and took him down."
