It's time to celebrate, but this birthday party doesn't involve a cone-shaped hat or a noise-maker.

Instead, Piccolo's second birthday celebration will feature live jazz, specialty cocktails and a new menu.

"Last year's was tremendously successful," said Tim Aylsworth, director of sales and marketing. "We had standing-room-only crowds, we had an outstanding line up of music, a great new small-bites menu at that point, and we're kind of repeating the formula for this year."

The event begins at 5 p.m., with live jazz taking the stage at 8 p.m.

"People will hear melodies that they know, but not things that they hear on the radio, in most cases," said Tim Chambliss. Chambliss organizes live music for Piccolo, as well as playing drums.

The birthday celebration will feature six musicians whom Piccolo is calling "Georgia and Alabama's best jazz talent." It's fitting, considering Piccolo is, by Chambliss' standards, a "true jazz lounge."

"(The managing director) has very much created a place where it is strictly jazz, and that's what is expected," Chambliss said. "The music creates the atmosphere."

The Piccolo atmosphere, Aylsworth and Chambliss said, is going to be classier than you might find at other bars or clubs.

The new menu will also be a main feature, having been inspired by the variety in cultures of the chefs.

"We're offering sushi, we're offering Spanish food, we're offering Hispanic food--food from everywhere," said restaurant chef Miguel Figueroa.

As part of the celebration, small-bites plates will be $1.

"It's going to be really good," Figueroa said. "If I go to a lounge, and you tell me that everything is $1, I would tell you to bring me one of everything."

And it will be easy to enjoy the food, drink, good conversation and music all at the same time, Chambliss said.

"Instrumental jazz does not force you to stop and pay attention to a vocalist, or sing along to a song, or do a certain dance," Chambliss said. "If you feel like sitting a little further back and conversing with you friends, that's perfectly acceptable, and everything comes together holistically to create that really nice experience."

When picking out party clothes, guests should lean toward dressy casual, Aylsworth said. Although there isn't a strict dress code, save the blue jeans for another day.

"We're looking for it to be just another huge successful birthday party," Alysworth said.

Piccolo is located at The Hotel at Auburn University. The birthday celebration will take place Friday and Saturday beginning at 5 p.m.

"The fact that a jazz club has remained pure in Auburn, Ala., for two years is a monumental thing," Chambliss said.
