Saturday may be lauded as a day to sleep in, but the Kiwanis Club of Auburn is trying to provide a reason to wake up early.
The club's all-you-can-eat pancake breakfast will begin at 6:30 a.m. But the $5 dollar cost pays for more than pancakes and sausages.
"The economy has hurt a lot of businesses, and a lot of charities are subsequently seeing reduced donations and budgets," said Eric Halverson, incoming club president. "It's going to be important to try to make sure that we can at least keep level funding."
The Kiwanis Club is a nonprofit organization that aids many local children's charities, from Key Club to Boys and Girls clubs to Storybook Farms, and Halverson said this is usually their biggest fundraiser.
Kiwanis Club members run the entire breakfast--from flipping pancakes to frying sausages and pouring juice--but they also have a little outside help.
"There are probably 25 or 30 vendors throughout the community that help us with this event," said event co-chair Doug Barto. "It's a real community event."
The breakfast, which in the past has attracted 2,500 to 3,000 guests, will run from 6:30-11 a.m. People can get a carry-out plate or stay and eat.
"It's just a very good breakfast--it's one of my favorites," Barto said.
Aubie will be at the event from 9-9:30 a.m.
"We're hoping to get a lot of traffic due to that," Halverson said. "He's been there each year for quite a few years.
The pancake breakfast will be held at the Auburn United Methodist Epworth Center on Gay Street across from Tiger Rags. Donations are appreciated.
