Dempsey Arts Center to host annual membership party

In an effort to boost membership for the new year, the Jan Dempsey Community Arts Center will hold its annual Auburn Arts Association Membership Event Saturday at 6 p.m.

"This is a party we do every year for our members," said Shelley Shields, co-president of JDCAC. "But it is also a time where we want to invite people from the community and ask them to become members."

To be featured during the event is an exhibit titled "From One to Infinity."

"We wanted to give it a theme to make the gallery more interesting and fun," Shields said. "The entire evening will be centered around numbers, and there will also be lots of entertainment."

Those in attendance will also be able to participate in various numbers games, art bingo and karaoke. Refreshments and live music will be provided for the guests.

Margaret Gluhman, who has helped run the gallery for 13 years, came up with the "From One to Infinity" theme.

"Last year the theme was A-Z," Gluhman said. "It is always exciting to see what the artists do with a theme like this."

Many of the contributing artists are local, and some are professors at the University.

Zdenko Krtic, associate professor of studio art in Auburn's art department, has a photograph in the gallery which captures a horse racing game at a carnival.

"I took the picture at a carnival in Italy not knowing about the 'One to Infinity' idea," Krtic said. "It contains a lot of numbers and I thought it worked well with the theme."

Krtic's daughter, who is in high school, also has a piece featured in the exhibit.

Members of the Auburn Arts Association receive quarterly newsletters and membership discounts for summer art camps and classes.

Membership applications can be found at the arts center at 222 E. Drake Ave.; the student price is $10. "From One to Infinity" will be on display until Feb. 23.

"When you sign up to become a member, you are really signing up to help us support the arts," Shields said. "We really hope to see people of all ages groups come out on Saturday."
