University Program Council held this semester's first open mic night Thursday in the Student Center Starbucks.
Participants ranged from violinists, pianists and other musicians to poetry readers.
"I have been playing the violin for 11 years," said Jim Flaniken, freshman in mechanical engineering and repeat performer at the UPC event. "I did the last open mic night. I'm still nervous ... Nerves are weird--you never know what'll happen."
Flaniken was first to perform and was followed by Drew Davis, sophomore in microbiology and pre-veterinary who also participated in a previous UPC open mic night. The audience joined in Davis' rendition of "Our Song" by Taylor Swift, which he sang and played on the guitar.
UPC expected the audience to be more than 100 people after last year's reached high into the double digits.
"There was a really good group of people that showed up," said Kacie Chumley, junior in math education and UPC committee member. "The last open mic night before Christmas was larger than this one, but overall I think it went really well."
Chumley said UPC will begin hosting two open mic nights each semester, with the next one planned for March.
