A spirit that is not afraid

Sustaining Auburn one speaker at a time

The Office of Sustainability plans to welcome Dr. Eban Goodstein, Director of Bard Center for Environmental Policy, for a lecture on sustainability and its relevance in the job market.

The lecture, "Leadership, Careers and Sustainability," will be held Monday, Jan. 30 at 6 p.m. in Room 125A of the Lowder Business Building.

"It's really going to help with (students') employment, and it's going to help their perspective on what they are learning," said Jen Morse, communication and outreach coordinator for the Office of Sustainability. "It would really benefit people to go."

The presentation will be available to all Auburn students and will offer sound advice even to those not in environmental sciences.

"It applies to any major on campus, anything you do you can be more sustainable at it," Morse said.

Though the word "lecture" often carries a negative connotation, especially in a college town, Goodstein's delivery is expected to be far from boring.

"(Goodstein) is a very dynamic speaker. He isn't monotone," Morse said. "He's very well spoken and inspirational."

If there is any truth in the old saying "experience is the best teacher" then Goodstein, who spoke on Auburn's campus in 2006, is someone to be heard.

According to a Bard CEP flier, which highlights the event, Goodstein directs two national educational initiatives on global warming: C2C Fellows and the National Climate Seminar.

Goodstein has authored many books, including the college textbook, "Economics and the Environment, John Wiley and Sons: 2010."

Morse expects the guest speaker will draw nothing short of a crowd with his experience and charisma.

"The room holds 250 people," she said. "I think it will be pretty full."

Morse added those living on campus will be able to sign in and receive points for Sustain-a-Bowl, an annual resource competition for residents organized by the Office of Sustainability and Housing and Residence Life.

"This is where the future's going - come learn how to incorporate (sustainability) into your major, your career search and to your future," Morse said.
