University sophomore dies following weekend wreck

Auburn University lost another member of its family this week.

Elizabeth "Libbie" Ainsworth, sophomore in interior design, passed away Tuesday afternoon at Columbus Regional Medical Center after being involved in a serious one-car accident Sunday night.

According to a report from Charles Dysart, Alabama state trooper and public information officer for the Alabama Department of Public Safety, the accident occurred at 8:33 p.m.

Ainsworth was traveling on U.S. Highway 280 with Drew Cole, senior in finance, when the accident occurred. Cole was driving the vehicle, a 2008 Toyota pickup truck.

Ainsworth, who was not wearing a seatbelt, was ejected from the vehicle. She survived the initial crash and was airlifted to Columbus Regional Medical Center, where she spent the next two days.

According to the Opelika Auburn News, Cole did not suffer serious injuries and was treated and released by the East Alabama Medical Center in Opelika.

Bill Harris, Lee County Coroner, confirmed that Ainsworth passed away Tuesday at 3:50 p.m. in Columbus Regional Medical Center's Intensive Care Unit as a result of traumatic brain injury.
