The city is advertising part-time job openings for students interested in staying in Auburn for the summer.
"The indications are that the economy is improving," said Steve Reeves, director of human resources for the city. "In terms of the job market, the unemployment rate is down in Auburn, which is excellent news."
This means that there are many temporary part-time jobs available, Reeves said.
A few of the openings in the summer include: recreation leader, pool manager, assistant pool manager, aquatic programs specialist, senior lifeguard and student communications officer job.
"We see a lot of students in the aquatic program," Reeves said.
The starting salary for a lifeguard is $7.35. Pool managers start with a $13.06 salary. Some of the duties of a pool manager include supervising and coordinating activities of the swimming pool staff, assigning duties to lifeguards, supervising the maintenance and cleanup of the swimming pools, conducting swimming classes and training senior lifeguards, according to the city's website.
Lifeguard and pool manager positions both require knowledge of CPR.
The student communications officer position is "emergency dispatch," Reeves said. The primary officer duty is to receive calls and relay information and instructions for emergency response personnel, according to the website.
Officers must have knowledge of computer information retrieval, communications operations, the Computer Aided Dispatch system and computer information entry procedures.
"Those jobs in the student public safety program pay wages and there's an opportunity for tuition reimbursement," Reeves said. "It's a tremendous opportunities for employees."
Some jobs are advertised year round, Reeves said, especially recreation leader and recreation supervisor positions. Many student public safety positions are year-round jobs as well.
"We've got a year-round student firefighter program," Reeves said.
Recreation leaders have a starting salary of $7.25 an hour and are required to oversee sports, recreation, cultural arts, crafts, exercise, rehabilitative or other related recreation activities. They must promote an environment of participation and document any incident of unsafe behavior or failure to adhere to set policies, according to the website.
"We have a lot of good jobs," Reeves said. "The city of Auburn is a great place to work, and it's a good way to get some experience and earn a little money, too."
The human resources department encourages students to visit the city of Auburn website to learn more about the opportunities available for summer or year-round positions. The website for job openings within the city is https://www.auburnalabama.org/jobs/jobs.aspx.
