A new building in the Auburn University Research Park has been named after Alabama Speaker of the House Mike Hubbard.
The announcement was made during the board of trustees meeting today, as Hubbard was responsible for securing half of the $28 million required to build the facility.
"This is an unexpected honor, and is very much appreciated," Hubbard told the board. "It is an honor and a privilege to represent Auburn University each day in Montgomery. I always want what is in the best interest of the university."
The facility will feature 20 laboratories and specialized equipment spaces for research in bioenergy, water quality, food safety, genomics, information science and ecosystem health.
The college of agriculture, engineering, sciences and mathematics, architecture, design and construction, the school of forestry and wildlife sciences will be housed in the building.
The Auburn Research Park opened in 2008 to establish a business and research environment to enhance the local, state and regional community, according to its website.
The 84,000 square-foot-building is currently under construction and is expected to create an immediate economic impact on Alabama and will have the potential to bring in millions of dollars in grants and contracts annually.
