Karen Wingard, former employee of the Auburn University Medical Clinic, was arrested Thursday, Sept. 27 for first-degree theft of property.
After a month-long investigation, police discovered Wingard may have been embezzling from the clinic since 2009.
"It's something that apparently had been going on for some time over there," said Capt. Tom Stofer, public relations officer for the police. "We received a complaint probably about a month ago that she was possibly stealing money. We investigated and ended up arresting her."
Stofer said Wingard cooperated fully with the investigation.
"We had already interviewed her, and she knew we had obtained a warrant for her arrest, so we simply contacted her and asked her to turn herself in, which she did," Stofer said. "She was taken into custody and transported to the Lee County Jail. I think there was a $5,000 bond, and she's since bonded out."
The police are continuing to investigate, and further information will be released at a later date, Stofer said.
