Class was interrupted in the Haley Center Friday afternoon when firefighters investigated a possible kitchen fire.

"We were in sociology class when we heard the fire alarm go off," said Jessica Terrell, freshman in communications. "We actually didn't know it was the fire alarm. We were watching a movie, and our teacher was like 'what is that noise?' and everybody had to leave."

The entire building was evacuated by the Community Emergency Response Team, which stood guard as firefighters investigated the source of the smoke.

"A lot of these programs started when Virginia Tech happened," said CERT leader Amanda Earnest. "It's a volunteer program, and there's official training with Public Safety."

The problem was soon resolved, and Battalion Chief Dow Sport declared the building safe.

"It came in as smoke visible from a kitchen," Sport said. "There was just some food in plastic that was in the microwave that melted, so it really had that plastic-burn smell. We just cleared it out and vented the rooms. Everyone can go back in."
