The Public Relations Student Society of America at Auburn is putting on its second annual seminar titled "PR for Dummies" Monday, Oct. 22.
The society invites anyone interested in making their business or organization more knowledgeable in PR and how to utilize it to the maximum.
PRSSA President Carolyn Rush, senior in public relations, created PR for Dummies last year after partnering with the University of Georgia's PRSSA.
"They helped us kind of craft this event to promote our club and to have a mutually beneficial relationship between our community and the students," Rush said. "We thought of this idea really to just educate and inform everyone what it is we do. Sometimes 'what is PR?' is not easily defined, so we hope to craft a definition in everyone's head and everyone something they can take away from it."
Sheyda Mehrara, coordinator for "PR for Dummies" and junior in public relations, said most people don't realize what public relations actually is.
"Basically, we just realized that a lot of people...don't realize how beneficial it is for them," Mehrara said. "Personally, everyone can use PR in their lives. Any good business needs press or if you're applying for a job you need good PR so we just realized there are a lot of organizations on campus that want to throw events and want to be successful and feel like they haven't had the resources and haven't had the ideas for where to get started."
The seminar consists of four different aspects of PR: event planning, fundraising, social media and media relations.
The workshops are interactive, last for 20 minutes and will repeat four times within a two-hour period, so everyone will have a chance to attend during a time that is convenient for them.
"That means if you wanted to go to event planning first then wanted to go to social media second, you can do that because there are people that are going to want to go to some and not others," Mehrara said.
Each workshop is conducted by four PRSSA students. It is $10 to attend all of the workshops. Food from restaurants such as Chick-fil-A, Little Caesars and Panera will be included.
