Softball falls again to Georgia

The No. 25 Georgia Bulldogs completed a series sweep against the softball team Sunday, March 17 at Jane B. Moore Field. The Tigers were able to put together a seventh-inning rally, but came up short, losing 9-8.

Georgia took a 2-0 lead in the first inning after Anna Swafford hit a lead off home run, and Katie Sowers scored on a sacrifice fly. Auburn would respond and put up three runs of its own in the first after Caitlin Schultze hit a double to the wall in right that scored Morgan Estlell. Later in the inning, Baylee Stephens delivered a two-run single to give Auburn a 3-2 lead.

In the fifth Georgia would put up five runs after Tina Losefa and Tess Sito hit back-to-back homers, making it a 7-3 game.

The Tigers answered in the bottom of the fifth with three runs, but Georgia added to its lead in the sixth, making it an 8-6 game.

In the bottom of the sixth, Branndi Melero cut the Georgia lead to 9-7 with a solo home run.

Auburn would rally in the seventh and make it a 9-8 game, but Georgia's Geri Ann Glasko was able to slam the door on the rally for a 9-8 victory.

"It was a typical Sunday in the SEC," said Head Coach Tina Deese. "Both teams just kept coming back and responding. I'm really proud of the fight from our team. Georgia was able to get the outs when they needed it. We can't hang our heads over this; we have a really good Florida State team coming in, and we have to get ourselves ready for that."

Auburn will play Florida State at home Tuesday, March 19 at 5 p.m.
