Updated: Snow day on The Plains extended to Thursday, traffic alerts

Update, Jan. 30, noon:

Outside temperatures have officially passed freezing, at 34.7 degrees.
The only road closure at this point is the 10th Street Bridge in Opelika due to ice.

Night Security Shuttles will not be running for the second night.
According to ALDOT, roads and bridges will be worse tonight than on Tuesday.

Auburn University classes have been canceled for Thursday, Jan. 30.

Update, Jan. 29, noon:

Auburn City Schools and Opelika City Schools will be closed tomorrow.
Auburn Police still ask public to stay off roads within city unless absolutely necessary until further notice, due to icy & unsafe conditions.

Update, Jan. 29, 10:30 a.m:

Highway 280 between Opelika and Phenix City is now completely shut down.
There are also major ice issues along I-85.
Lee County EMA is reporting multiple accidents throughout the night, including an ALDOT sand truck.
There is a hard freeze warning in effect for Auburn.
According to the National Weather Service, bitterly cold temperatures are expected again tonight.

Update, Jan. 29, 12:04 a.m:
Lee County Emergency Management Agency is advising everyone to stay off the road for the remainder of the night, due to extremely icy road conditions.
Assessments will begin again tomorrow morning.

Lee County Emergency Management Agency announced Highway 280 Eastbound from Opelika to Phenix City will be closed for an extended period of time.

ALDOT has issued a statewide travel advisory for all highways, interstates and bridges.

AU Emergency Management announced the winter storm warning has been canceled for Auburn University.
Winter precipitation has moved out of the Auburn area.
AU Emergency Management still warns against travel.

Update, Jan. 28, 9 p.m:
Additional road closure: Opelika/Auburn Road at Pitts Street in Auburn City Limits.
According to US National Weather Service, light to moderate snow should continue across the far Southeast counties until 10 p.m.
Temperatures tonight will be dangerously low.

Lee County Emergency Management Agency reports the following road closures:
Dean Road, South Donahue at Jordan-Hare Stadium and Highway 14 in Auburn City's jurisdiction.

Update, Jan. 28, 8:15 p.m:
According to Lee County Sheriff's Office, all roadways in Lee County are open at this time.
However, conditions may change rapidly overnight and road closings are possible. All motorists are encouraged to avoid travel completely. If driving is a necessity, Lee County Sheriff's Office warns motorists to drive slowly and avoid hills.

The Lee County Emergency Management Agency advises charging all electronic devices to prepare for potential lost power due to ice on power lines.

The Auburn Campus Recreation Center has announced it will be closed Wednesday, Jan. 29, as well.

Auburn University announced classes for Wednesday, Jan. 29, have been canceled.

AU Emergency Management advises that roadways, especially bridges and overpasses, are becoming increasingly hazardous.

The winter storm warning has spread has spread to include much of North Alabama.
The highest threat for snow accumulation will be along I-20 and I-59.
Several roads in Alabama are impassable, due to icy conditions.
Snowfall is expected to start in Auburn around 12:00 p.m. and last until late tonight.
Auburn University announced the AU Night Security Shuttles will not run tonight due to icy road conditions and low temperatures.

Terrell AYCTE: 8 a.m.-8 p.m.
Terrell T-Store: 8 a.m.-8p.m.
Village Food Court: 8 a.m.-8 p.m.
Cub Stop C-Store: 8 a.m.-8 p.m.
South Donahue C-Store: 10 a.m.-8 p.m.
Plains to Plate: 8 a.m.-8 p.m.
General Lee food truck: on the Roosevelt Concourse, 10 a.m.-2 p.m.


Auburn University announced classes for Tuesday Jan. 28 have been canceled due to a winter storm threat.
The National Weather Service has issued a winter storm watch for much of central and southern Alabama, effective Tuesday morning.
According to weather experts from the National Weather Service, two inches of snow or sleet is possible in Auburn and surrounding cities.
Forecasters warn against icy conditions, and say severe traffic issues are likely.
Snowfall is most likely to occur between Tuesday afternoon and 3 a.m. Wednesday.
Auburn University will also suspend normal operations and some dining services are closed.
