Jule Collins Smith, the person the Jule Collins Smith Museum of Fine Art is named for, died Saturday, June 13 in Houston.

Smith was born in Auburn and enrolled in Alabama Polytechnic Institute in 1946. She married Albert J. Smith and did not finish her degree at that time. She ultimately finished her degree in sociology in 1999.

According to a press release issued by the University, Albert gifted money to build the museum in his wife's honor as a 50th anniversary present.

Both Jule and Albert were active in selecting the location and the design of the building.

A memorial service will be held Friday, June 19, at 11 a.m. at St. Luke's United Methodist Church in Houston.
