Auburn golfers compete at US Amateur at Olympia Fields Country Club

Auburn sent three current golfers and one former golfer to the U.S. Amateur in Olympia Fields, Illinois, this week, but none of the four advanced to the match play portion of the tournament.

Senior Michael Johnson had the best finish of the Auburn representatives, scoring a cumulative 3-over par 143 in the two rounds of stroke play on Monday and Tuesday.

The score placed Johnson in a tie with 17 others, but only 10 spots were available in the match play field. Johnson was eliminated from the tournament after a bogey on the third playoff hole.

Incoming freshman Jacob Solomon finished at 4-over 144 on the par-70 course at Olympia Fields Country Club, while junior Will Long carded a cumulative 8-over 148.

Dan Stringfellow, who graduated in May, scored 5-over 145 on his home course.

Brett Coletta of Melbourne, Australia, won the stroke play portion of the tournament, firing a cumulative 7-under 133 over the two rounds.

Auburn’s men’s golf team opens its fall season on Sept. 11 at the Carpet Capital Collegiate in Dalton, Georgia.
