Running backs vie for starting job in fall camp

Auburn entered spring practice with three running backs fighting to replace Cameron Artis-Payne, the SEC’s leading rusher in 2014.

Another running back has since entered the picture, however, further complicating the competition.

Kerryon Johnson, Mr. Football in Alabama last season, will split reps with returning backs Roc Thomas and Peyton Barber, as well as junior college transfer Jovon Robinson.

Coach Gus Malzahn said on Wednesday, Aug. 5, all four running backs would be given a chance to start.

“For the next two weeks, we’re going to try to give them somewhat equal reps,” Malzahn said. “We’re hoping somebody will really raise up, especially in the scrimmages when they’re getting tackled.”

Malzahn said he feels every back could perform well in the starting role.

“The good thing is we’ve got options and we’ve got guys we feel good about,” Malzahn said. “I think that’s the best thing. You can never have enough running back depth.”
