College Democrats meet Jimmy Carter

The Auburn University College Democrats recently had the opportunity to meet former president Jimmy Carter.

According to the president of the Auburn University College Democrats, Calvin Wilborn, this organization is comprised of liberal-thinking students. He said the organization allows them to come together and talk about things that are going on, especially as future progressive leaders.

Wilborn said there are about 20-30 members who go on trips, push for initiatives on campus and talk about politics. He said Auburn is ranked the most conservative school in the United States, so having a liberal club on campus is very important and imperative.

According to Wilborn, Carter has melanoma and it has spread to his brain, so they know it’s going to be terminal. He said they aren’t sure how long he has.

Wilborn said the organization got the chance to visit Plains, Georgia, to attend his church service and Sunday School. He said while there, members got the chance to meet church members and also had an interview with CBS news about their overall experience.

According to Wilborn there were about 10 Auburn students who were able to go.

“Jimmy Carter is a fine example of a great leader; you don’t have that nowadays often,” Wilborn said. “Someone who sticks to their faith no matter what the faith is, no matter what the party is. He has just been a very constant leader overtime, and rarely do you ever get the chance to see that. Also, as our former president of the United States, it was just an awesome opportunity for Auburn students to get a chance to meet him, not only talk to him and shake his hand.”
