Free and confidential HIV testing will be available on campus on Thursday, Nov. 5 in honor of World AIDS Day.
The event is sponsored by AU Student National Pharmaceutical Association, Unity Wellness, The Multicultural Center and Auburn Health Promotion and Wellness Services.
One-third of all new HIV infections occur among people under age 30, according to an article featured in AIDS Education and Prevention. Of the 1.1 million individuals living with HIV in the U.S., one in five do not know they are infected.
"Auburn University, like many other colleges and universities, is aware the need to inform our students about this serious health risk as well as to provide our students with access to screening for these sexually transmitted diseases," said Julie Matsunaga, collegiate recovery coordinator for Auburn Health Promotion and Wellness Services, in an email. "By offering outreach-based testing in a non-medical setting, we are able to access students who may not be engaged in routine medical care. Through the HIV Awareness and Testing event we hope to help de-stigmatize HIV testing and normalize the process among young people."
The testing will be offered from 10 a.m.- 2 p.m. in Student Center Room 2326.
