Relay for Life took to the concourse this week to promote cancer awareness and increase interest in its April event.
The group's mission was to "paint the campus purple" and spread the word about Relay for Life and how to get involved.
It had a different theme each day throughout the week and members handed out prizes and other free items to promote Relay for Life.
Naomi Yusafi, junior in accounting, talked about the group's goals for the week on the concourse.
“Basically the whole reason we’re out here this week it to just spread awareness about what we’re doing and raise general cancer awareness,” Yusafi said. “We wanted to make sure the students knew that we were out here, so that they can know about Relay and know about what we do and maybe become interested in our event, which is in April of next year.”
The theme for the April event was announced in the beginning of October and will be "Holiday Extravaganza."
People who attend Relay for Life will dress as the holiday of their choice, such as Christmas, Mardi Gras, New Years, Thanksgiving and more.
Yusafi talked about some of the things they did each day this week to raise awareness in a fun way.
“On Monday we had a photo booth where people could come and take pictures and stuff like that with little props,” Yusafi said. “On Tuesday we had Tata Tuesday where we played ‘bra-pong’ on the concourse. That was fun.”
Yusafi said next they passed out ribbons to represent the different types of cancer.
“Wednesday we did Y-Wednesday, where we handed out little ribbons and stuff for their backpacks, and they were really pretty,” Yusafi said. “We had them all lined up.”
Laurén Lanier, junior in business, said that each ribbon has a different significance based on its color.
“There’s one for each different type of cancer, so there were all different colors,” Lanier said.
Yusafi concluded with the rest of the weeks plans.
“Thursday we did balloon popping, so people could pop balloons for the chance to win prizes that were inside the balloon and today [Friday] we’re doing trivia questions,” Yusafi said.
Some of the trivia questions included statistics and other facts about cancer that students might not know. People who answered the trivia questions correctly received candy.
Yusafi also said besides raising awareness, one of the group's goals this week was to have fun.
“That’s really why we’re out here, but we’re also just out here to have fun,” Yusafi said. “We’ve been doing a lot of cool things this week.”
