University President Jay Gogue updated students, faculty and staff about the steps the University is taking to improve diversity and inclusiveness on campus in an emailed message Monday, Dec. 7.
The Office of Diversity and Multicultural Affairs will be strengthened, according to the email. Details of these changes have not yet been announced.
A steering committee will begin a climate study on diversity and inclusion beginning next semester, the email stated. The group will offer specific recommendations based on its findings.

Dear Auburn students, faculty and staff,
Several positive developments have taken place since my recent message about diversity and inclusion. Based on feedback I’ve received from across campus, I want to provide a brief update before we break for the holidays.
First, we’re strengthening the Office of Diversity and Multicultural Affairs. More details will come soon, but the changes will elevate this office to a more central role in the life of Auburn and put our institution in a better position to facilitate a campus environment that maximizes learning and the common good.
Second, we’re taking concrete steps to hear concerns and ideas from the campus community. The Provost’s Office has assembled a steering committee that will begin a climate study on diversity and inclusion beginning spring semester. Members of the committee will look at a range of issues, including how we recruit and retain underrepresented students and faculty, build cultural competency and uphold a culture of respect. After hearing from campus, the group will offer specific recommendations.
The committee’s success depends on your participation. I encourage you to share your perspectives and experiences through upcoming listening sessions, interviews, surveys and forums. Please look for more information in coming weeks.
Intuitively, we know that diversity increases creativity and generation of new ideas, which is at the heart of our educational mission. I look forward to keeping you updated and moving forward together.
