A spirit that is not afraid

Supper Club prepares to close, auction planned for Saturday, Jan. 2

John Brandt, co-owner of the War Eagle Supper Club, had heard similar rumors for more than 20 years, so when he first heard the property the bar had been bought and the bar would be forced to close, he didn't believe it.

"I denied it to several people when I first heard rumors," Brandt said.

However, this time it was true.

The War Eagle Supper Club, an 87-year-old installment once on the edge of town, will have one last party Thursday, Dec. 31.

Telluride, the No. 1 band at the Supper Club from the 1970s-90s according to Brandt, will play as long as there are people there. Ziggy Luis, who has played every Saturday for approximately eight years, will also play.

"The alumni would love to see (Telluride) one more time," Brandt said.

The event is sold out, but Brandt said he hopes to sell more tickets at the door as the night goes on, especially after the Eastern time champagne toast at 11 p.m.

Brandt said the past few months have been sad, but he has enjoyed hearing about how the bar has touched others. He has been impacted by the bar too, working there for 35 years.

"Its the only real job I've ever had," Brandt said.

The last party isn't the last opportunity to go to the Supper Club. An auction will be held Saturday, Jan. 2, 2016, and almost everything in the building will be sold.

"If someone wants the dressing room door, they can have it," Brandt said.

Brandt said doors will open at 4 p.m. for the silent auction, which will last until 7 p.m. The live auction, for a few bigger items, will go from approximately 8-9 p.m. Soggy Luis will play again.

Brandt said items up for auction include an autographed Kenny Chesney poster and guitars adorning the walls. Proceeds will be used to pay off debt, according to Brandt.

Brant is staying out of the bar busies for now, going to work at a media streaming company in Opelika. However, he said he has been talking about opening a new spot "3-4 months down the road."
