A day after Auburn hired a new defensive coordinator, a third defensive staffer has left to become the defensive line coach at South Carolina.
Lance Thompson, who coached linebackers at Auburn this season, will join the staff of Will Muschamp, who left after one season as Auburn's defensive coordinator to become the head coach at South Carolina.
"I'm excited to have Coach Thompson join our staff," Muschamp said in a news release from South Carolina. "He did a great job calling the Auburn defense in their bowl win over Memphis. He has coached multiple positions throughout his career and has a great understanding of our defensive system. He will be an outstanding addition to our staff."
Thompson called the plays for Auburn in its 31-10 win over Memphis in Wednesday's Birmingham Bowl.
He stayed at Auburn for only one year, as he joined the staff in January after Muschamp's arrival.
Thompson's departure, along with that of former cornerbacks coach Travaris Robinson, leaves Auburn with only one defensive assistant coach, which is defensive line coach Rodney Garner.
It is unclear at this time if head coach Gus Malzahn or new defensive coordinator Kevin Steele will be responsible for the hiring of new position coaches.
