Travis Williams hired as linebackers coach

Travis Williams, the former Auburn linebacker, graduate assistant and defensive analyst will join the Tigers full time, as coach Gus Malzahn hired Williams as the new Auburn linebackers coach Thursday, the same day a new co-defensive coordinator and secondary coach was hired as well.

"I have always been very impressed by Travis’ knowledge and passion for the game and his ability to relate to our players," Malzahn said in a release. "I'm glad to have him as an on-field coach. Travis embodies Auburn and what Auburn football is about. He’s a great addition to our staff."

Williams joined Auburn in 2001 and redshirted before bursting onto the scene as one of the top playmakers for the Tigers. He earned All-SEC honors twice: once during the undefeated 2004 season and again in 2005.

After going undrafted in the 2006 NFL Draft, Williams signed with the Atlanta Falcons, where he played until 2008.

He rejoined Auburn as a graduate assistant in 2009 and was part of the 2010 national championship team.

In 2014, Williams became a defensive analyst before serving as an on-field coach in Auburn's previous two bowl games as the Tigers underwent coaching changes.

"I am very thankful to Coach Malzahn for believing in me and for giving me this opportunity," Williams said in a release. "To whom much is given, much will be required. I understand the expectations and responsibility of being the linebackers coach at Auburn. I understand Auburn and those that laid the foundation before me. Auburn is home. If it wasn't for Auburn, I wouldn’t have met my wife and had two beautiful girls."
