Severe Weather Coverage: Tornado watch canceled for Lee County

Update 12:05 a.m.: The tornado watch for Lee County has been canceled.


Update 10:52 p.m.: The National Weather Service in Birmingham said the tornado watch remains in effect, but the threat has decreased to Central Alabama. 

Damaging winds up to 60 mph and quarter size hail are possible. Another line of storms will move into Alabama from Mississippi overnight.

Update 8:50 p.m.: The National Weather Service has canceled tornado watches in the western part of Alabama, but the tornado watch for Lee County remains in effect until midnight.


Update 5:56 p.m.: A tornado watch has been issued for Lee County until midnight. The National Weather Service said conditions are favorable for the formation of severe thunderstorms and tornadoes.

Thunderstorms will move into Alabama where the environment is favorable for damaging winds and tornados, the weather service said.

Update 5:11 p.m.: The baseball game between Auburn and Kennesaw State has been postponed until either April 20 or May 11. 


Update 4:22 p.m.: Gov. Robert Bentley has issued a statewide state of emergency because of the threat of severe weather.

“It is necessary to issue this state of emergency to ensure state resources are available and can be deployed in a timely manner, if necessary,” Bentley said in a statement. “Alabamians are no stranger to severe weather, and as state agencies are preparing, I encourage all Alabamians to take this threat seriously and prepare for impact of severe weather."

Bentley also ordered the State Emergency Operations Center in Clanton to monitor the weather.


Update 3:23 p.m.: UPC's info session has been rescheduled for March 7. 

Update 3:05 p.m.: The following places have been closed because of the threat of severe weather. 

  • All Auburn City School programs and activities will end no later than 6 p.m.
  • Auburn Public Library to close at 5 p.m.
  • Auburn Parks and Recreation to close at 5 p.m. All leagues and programs are canceled. 

Update 2:06: Storms are now expected to move into eastern Alabama at midnight, according to the National Weather Service in Birmingham. 


Severe weather is expected to move through the Auburn area Tuesday night, Feb. 23.

The National Weather Service in Birmingham said storms are expected to move into eastern Alabama at 10 p.m. and will move out of the area by 4 a.m.

Auburn has been placed under a significant threat area, which means conditions will be favorable for strong tornadoes, damaging winds up to 70 mph and golf ball-sized hail, according to the weather service.

Ralph Brown Draughon Library and Greene Hall will be opened as a shelter if a tornado watch is issued, according to a severe weather briefing issued by the University Department of Public Safety.
