University to purchase parking deck with 920 spaces

The Auburn University Board of Trustees approved the purchase of the North Parking Deck on Magnolia Avenue at its meeting at Auburn University Montgomery Friday, Feb. 5.

The deck will be used for residential student parking, Dan King, associate vice president for facilities, told the board.

The West Village parking lot dedicates 635 spots to residential parking. Those spaces will move to the new deck, providing almost 300 more residential spots while freeing up the Village spots for daytime parking.

The acquisition will end the "fairly inconvenient" practice of forcing students to move their cars on game days, King said.

Currently, before every home game, students who park in the West Village lot must move their cars to designated off-campus parking spaces.

The cost per parking space is lower than if the University built new spaces on campus, according to King. The purchase price will be higher than the appraisal price, but the benefits to the University "far outweigh" the price.
