Men's golf tops No. 4 Florida State, wins Seminole Intercollegiate

One round wouldn't have been enough for Auburn on Saturday at the Southwood Golf Course, but two was.

Auburn roared back from a disappointing first round to post two solid rounds and win the Seminole Intercollegiate by two strokes on Saturday in Tallahassee, Florida.

After posting an 11-under 277 in the second round of play, Auburn still trailed host Florida State by a stroke. With inclement weather that would threaten Sunday's play scheduled to move into the area, tournament officials decided to play the third round on Saturday. Auburn defeated No. 4 Florida State by three strokes in the final round to overtake the Seminoles and win the title.

Junior Matt Gilchrest led Auburn in the tournament's second round, firing eight birdies on his way to a 6-under round. Despite shooting 1-over in the final round, Gilchrest finished tied for seventh.

Quality depth has been a problem at times for the Tigers this season, but it was no issue in the Seminole Intercollegiate. All four of the players who counted for Auburn's team score — Gilchrest, seniors Michael Johnson and Jake Mondy and junior Will Long — finished at or above 13th on the leaderboard.

Johnson and Mondy each shot a combined 4-under on Saturday, while Long finished the day at even-par.

Sophomore Ben Schlottman rebounded from a 9-over-par first round to post a combined 2-under on Saturday.

Freshman Jacob Solomon, playing as an individual, tied for 13th alongside Johnson and Long, carding a combined 1-under on Saturday. The only player to struggle in the final two rounds was Graysen Huff, who carded 17 bogeys in two rounds and shot 12-over as an individual.

Auburn will play for the third consecutive weekend and look for its third win of the season on March 18–20 at the Schenkel Invitational in Statesboro, Georgia.
