A spirit that is not afraid

'Ride-O-Rama on Roosevelt' kicks off No Impact Week

On March 28, from 10:30 a.m.–1:30 p.m., Auburn students were invited to try out the War Eagle Bike Share where a temporary bike lane was opened on the Roosevelt Concourse for participants.

Matthew Preisser, Office of Sustainability intern, said they chose to hold the event on Monday to coincide with the transportation day in No Impact Week.

“We will also be looking for people's opinions on the possibility of having more bike lanes around campus,” Preisser said.

The War Eagle Bike Share program is an important, new part of sustainability on Auburn’s campus, Preisser said.

“No Impact Week is an international initiative designed to promote sustainability by challenging people to live lifestyles that are better for them and for the environment,” Preisser said. “Biking is a great option for sustainable travel and there are many health benefits from biking, so it will be great for students to learn more about the new bike share program and how they can use it in the future.”

Preisser said these bikes are a great alternative to driving cars around campus.

“Another big part of sustainability that is often overlooked is personal well-being, “ Preisser said. “Biking is a very healthy option for transportation and the bike share program will allow people with easier access to bikes.”

This event is the perfect way for people to learn more about how the War Eagle Bike Share program works, according to Preisser.

“The bike share program is very easy to use and it is a great to get between classes, bike to certain places that may not be on campus and to just bike around campus with friends,” Preisser said. “This is a great time for students to come talk with us about any questions they may have about signing up or using the bike share program.”

Preisser said his favorite part of the event is the temporary bike lane to see if people would be interested in more permanent ones.

“More bike lanes on campus will encourage more sustainable travel and will also make it even easier for students and faculty to bike around campus using either their own personal bikes or the bike share bikes,” Preisser said. “Auburn Outdoors does many things with bikes throughout the semester and will be doing more bike activities throughout the semester.”
