'Terrorism and Voices of Reason in the Muslim World' discussion set for March 3

The Atlantic Institute will sponsor an interactive discussion, "Terrorism and Voices of Reason in the Muslim World," on Thursday, March 3, in the Foy Auditorium.

Parvez Ahmed, author and professor of finance at the University of North Florida will accept questions from the audience. Ahmed and the audience will consider questions such as:

  • What is the nature of terrorism?
  • What scriptural sources relate to violence and terrorism?
  • What socio-political factors contribute?
  • What is the situation of American Muslims in today's climate of suspicion?

Ali Dag, president of the Diversity and Tolerance Organization and graduate student in industrial and systems engineering, sent The Auburn Plainsman a statement regarding the event:

"I strongly believe that 'no true muslim can be a terrorist, and no terrorist can be a true muslim," Dag said. "Recently a lot of events emerged that defamed the true image of islam by the acts of a few that call themselves muslims. We wanted to showcase the true nature of islam and help people in Auburn/Opelika area to hear the story from an American muslim's perspective with this event."

The discussion will begin at 6 p.m. and pizza and soft drinks will be available.
