Apparel design students to host annual fashion show

On Thursday, April 14, Auburn’s Apparel Merchandising and Design Association will be putting on a fashion show. Auburn University students studying apparel design and apparel marketing will have the chance to show off some of their work, creativity and the results of their sleepless nights.

The show is an annual event and includes a fashion show featuring clothing designed and created by apparel design students as well as display tables created by apparel merchandising students.

In the past, display tables have been sponsored by local boutiques, such as Behind the Glass, and feature examples of window displays of clothing and other merchandise in stores.

Apparel design students design and create all of the clothing for this show. The design students chose their models based on who they think will best represent the clothing they designed.

“So you start with a prototype, and you get the model’s body size and go prototype to prototype and fit the clothes how you want on them,” said Paige Hawke, junior in apparel design.

The show is divided into three parts.

The first designs modeled on the runway could be submitted by any apparel design student, freshman to senior. The other two parts of the show feature the projects of the capstone class for apparel design students and then a competition portion of the show in which students submit pieces that could earn them scholarship money or awards.

In the apparel design program at Auburn, there are four groups from the capstone class this year that will be presenting their work from the semester.

“The process of capstone for us is the idea that we are finding a niche that a brand doesn’t have and then creating it,” said Mary Maud Meacham, a senior in apparel design.

Each group in this class has a different theme. One of the groups decided to combine a high-end designer, Balmain, with Adidas in order to feature an athleisure line.

“Everything a model does is photographed, so it’s supposed to be street style trends that they can throw on after a yoga class, for example,” Hawke said. “I did a tennis skirt and a crop top with mesh long sleeves.”

The group chose to pair these two brands because of the popularity of athleisure attire right now. Other examples of clothing that will be modeled from this group are joggers, a vest with a cropped sports bra and a neoprene casual dress. The clothing is designed to be easy to move in yet perfect for being in public.

The show is a way for the students to have the chance to show off what they have done and share their work with the campus.

This is an annual event for AMDA, and as the years progress, new features are added to the show. The fashion show will even have its own Snapchat filter this year for the audience and participants to use throughout the night.

Auburn’s annual Apparel Merchandising and Design Association fashion show will take place Thursday, April 14, in Auburn Arena. The show will begin at 6:30 p.m., and tickets are $15 for general admission.
