Auburn gives up four runs in final frame, drops finale to Ole Miss, 6-5

Auburn’s baseball squad left Oxford empty handed, falling short of victory in three consecutive games to the Ole Miss Rebels. The Tigers had an especially heartbreaking loss Sunday afternoon, 6-5.

Auburn led the majority of the game, but could not hold on in the end.

After a scoreless first inning, the Tigers came alive in the top half of the second.

Niko Buentello was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning. Blake Logan doubled down the left field line, and then Jackson Burgreen followed up with a double off of the left-center field wall to put the game at 2-0. Kyler Deese hit a ground-rule double, scoring Burgreen. Deese proceeded to score courtesy of a Cody Nulph single to make the Tiger lead 4-0.

In the second, fourth, and sixth innings, Ole Miss came knocking on the door, only to be turned away by terrific defense and clever pitching by Casey Mize.

Mize, a freshman, pitched well, and ended up tossing seven full innings with two walks, three strikeouts, and no earned runs.

In the top of the seventh, Anfernee Grier doubled down the left field line and moved to third base on a wild pitch. Jordan Ebert later grounded into a double play that resulted in Grier scoring to make it 5-0 through seven.

At the top of the eighth, Mize went out after throwing a career-high 110 pitches, and was relieved by left-hander Ben Braymer.

Braymer allowed two runs in the eighth on a two-run homer.

After an uneventful top of the ninth, Ole Miss started off the bottom half of the inning with a leadoff walk and a single. Ole Miss homered to put the game at even, 5-5.

Auburn brought in Gabe Klobosits to try to finish the inning, but Ole Miss squeaked out another run on an error and two singles to beat Auburn in walkoff fashion, 6-5.

Auburn (18-22) will face South Alabama Tuesday at 6 p.m. in Plainsman Park.
