Board approves several renovation projects, Leach Science Center addition

The Board of Trustees approved several renovation projects at its Friday, June 10 meeting.

The Haley Center Quad, the Gavin Engineering Research Building and Broun Hall will undergo renovations.

Haley Center

The Haley Center Quad renovations will "facilitate the relocation of the Department of Mathematics and Statistics from Parker Hall and Allison Laboratory." The project will renovate approximately 40,000 square feet of space on the third floor of Haley Center Quads One and Two, according to Associate Vice President for Facilities Dan King. The project will be funded through University general funds.

The Textile Building was constructed in 1930 and renamed in 2016. In 2015, the Board approved the firm Stevens and Wilkinson as the project architect. The project will renovate 59,100 square feet and will provide space to relocate and consolidate several research labs, King said. The estimated total project cost of the Gavin Engineering Research Building renovations is $16.75 million.

The Broun Hall renovations will include a "two-story main entrance addition, revised lighting, finishes, information technology, mechanical and electrical systems, and landscape improvements adjacent to the concourse." The estimated total cost of the project is $5 million and will be funded by Samuel Ginn College of Engineering gift funds.  

Also approved:

  • The final project approval for the 50,000 square foot Leach Science Center addition. The addition to the Leach Science Center will consolidate and relocate the Physics Department and faculty from Parker Hall and Allison Laboratory, according to King. The project will cost an estimated $19 million, to be funded through the University's general funds. 
  • A $542 increase in professional fees for the College of Veterinary Medicine per student, per semester. The increase, which will go into effect in fall 2017, will be used to "meet instructional obligations as required by accreditation standards and provide support for the operation of facilities," according to Provost Timothy Boosinger.
  • The establishment of a professional fee for students enrolled in the Interior Design Program. The fee will be $1,000 per student, per semester beginning in fall 2017 to be increased to $2,000 per student, per semester in fall 2018. 
  • Kappa Sigma fraternity lease extension.
  • Approval of project initiation and authorization to begin the project architect selection process for the Recreation & Wellness Center Basement Buildout project.
  • Approval of project initiation and selection of project architect Poultry Infectious Disease Biocontainment Research Facility & Fish Biodiversity Laboratory relocation.
  • Selection of construction manager for the Performing Arts Center.
