New deck will free more than 600 parking spaces for students and faculty

The North Park Deck, located on the corner of West Magnolia Avenue and Wire Road and approved by the Board of Trustees in February, will be used for residential parking, said Parking Services Manager Don Andrae.

The new addition will allow more than 300 students from the Village to park closer to their dorms and will open up more than 600 parking spaces for commuter students and faculty, Andrae said.

The 920-space parking garage will also spare residents from moving their cars on gamedays and will provide additional parking for events that are held in the Arena, according to Andrae.

Beginning in the fall, the Village parking lot will be available to students with PC4 permits.

Vehicle registration for the 2016-17 academic year will begin Friday, July 8 and bicycle and motorcycle registration will begin Monday, August 1.

In other parking news:

The 75 spaces by The Cambridge dorms will be A/B-zone parking beginning in fall 2016. This decision was based on a shortage of faculty and staff parking, Andrae said, and the anticipation that the demand for parking in the area will increase after the completion of the Mell Classroom Building.

Parking Services has added an additional 85 B-zone spaces in a gravel lot behind Chick-Fil-A on Magnolia Avenue. The University was scheduled to lose the Wright Street Lot, which contains 100 leased spaces, for a new development planned for that area, Andrae said. The development has been delayed until May 2017, however, freeing up the 85 parking spaces.
