Former "Voice" contestant to perform in Opelika

Former "Voice" contestant Jordy Searcy will be making his way to The Plains on Friday, Sept. 9.

Searcy, who was on "The Voice" in 2014, will perform at The Railyard in Opelika at 8 p.m.

Searcy’s backing band features Auburn native Corey Spicer on the drums.

Spicer is the brother of Tim Spicer and son of Tom Spicer, who run Spicer’s Music in Auburn.

Spicer and Searcy had seen each other several times as they both toured in Alabama, but didn’t meet officially until they both moved to Nashville.

“I needed a drummer for a gig and I contacted him," Searcy said. "He learned all my parts in a half hour, we’ve played probably 80 shows so far this year."

On Friday, Searcy and Spicer will feature special guests who they have known their entire lives.

“I’m really excited for this show because Corey Spicer plays percussion with me, and we’re going to get our dads to play with us, my dad on keys, and Corey’s dad is going to play bass with us,” Searcy said. “ It’s cool because both of our dads are great musicians, it just made sense for us to jam out together.”

Searcy was attending the University of North Alabama before being featured on The Voice. Searcy works in Nashville now.

“I ended up dropping out of school, I got off the show right before it was time to register for classes so I just had to go ahead and register, but then I ended up dropping out later that year because I was working in music that much,” Searcy said. “I had to make that decision, do I want to be on the road or do I want to finish my degree.”

Searcy’s father, like his son, has worked extensively in the Nashville music scene.

Searcy is excited to be following in his father’s footsteps.

“At the end of the month I’m playing a place called Koinonia Coffee, and I was actually telling my dad about this show at the end of the month and he told me that he actually played a show at Koinonia Coffee when he was in Nashville in his 20s,” Searcy said, “I’ll be carrying on that legacy at the end of September.”

Tickets to the show on Friday are $5 at the gate.
