Natasha Trethewey reads at Third Thursday

Former United States Poet Laureate and current Poet Laureate for the state of Mississippi, Natasha Trethewey, came to the Jule Collins Smith Museum of Fine Arts for a “Third Thursday” event on Thursday, Oct. 6.

The event was preceded by a performance from a jazz trio and a book signing by Trethewey.

Emery DiGiorgio, Southern Humanities Review editor, gave a reading of several recent selections from the Review, as well as some of her own work.

Ken Autrey, Third Thursday coordinator, went on stage to thank the program’s sponsors and introduce Trethewey.

“Our guest’s works deal with [The South’s] troubled saga of race relations," Autrey said.

Trethewey said she'd be sharing a variety of her work.

“I’m going to read tonight from some older poems mixed in with some new poems,” Trethewey said.

Trethewey said her poems dealt with racially charged issues as well as some lesser-discussed historical prejudices and evils African Americans have faced.
