Gus Malzahn provides injury updates ahead of Iron Bowl

Auburn has had a rash of injuries leading up to the 81st Iron Bowl, but the Tigers might be the healthiest they’ve been since the season opener on Saturday.

Most notably, running back Kamryn Pettway will be available to play for the first time since injuring his left leg near the end of the win over Vanderbilt.

Auburn coach Gus Malzahn said he wouldn’t peg Pettway as 100 percent healthy, but he said Pettway will play.

“He is one of our impact players,” Malzahn said. “He is one of the best running backs in all of college football and one of the best in our league. Any time you have a guy like that back, it changes things and it changes things in a good way for us.”

H-back Chandler Cox will be back for the Iron Bowl, as will linebackers Tre’ Williams and Darrell Williams. Cornerback Josh Holsey will play as well.

In fact, there are hardly any injuries on the defensive side of the ball, if there are any at all. “Defensively I think we are close to being 100 percent,” Malzahn said.

Two players’ conditions are still up in the air, though. Malzahn said he would know more about Stanton Truitt, who left the Georgia game after his first carry, ‘later in the week.’

The other one might be the most integral. Quarterback Sean White’s status won’t be decided until near the end of the week, Malzahn said, and according to him, there’s a reason for it.

“You do what’s best for your team, and you never want to make a decision earlier and be wrong rather than wait until later,” Malzahn said. “You have a chance to see exactly Sean’s status and everything that goes with that.”
