Auburn defensive backs coach Wesley McGriff hired as defensive coordinator at Ole Miss

For the second time in two years, Auburn will be looking for a new defensive backs coach.

Wesley McGriff — who also was a co-defensive coordinator at Auburn — will be the defensive coordinator at Ole Miss, multiple outlets confirmed Thursday. He previously was the Rebels' cornerbacks coach and co-defensive coordinator in 2012.

McGriff started coaching at his alma mater, Savannah State, as a graduate assistant in 1990. After moving up to interim head coach there, he went to Kentucky State, where he served multiple positions.

He made stops at Eastern Kentucky, Kentucky, Baylor, Miami (Fla.) and Vanderbilt before his first stint at Ole Miss. McGriff spent three seasons in the NFL coaching the New Orleans Saints' defensive backs.

In McGriff's one season on The Plains, Auburn saw its defensive passing efficiency rise from eighth-best in the SEC to third, and from 31st-best in the country to 16th.
