Tornado warning canceled in Auburn

Update: At 8:41 a.m. the Weather Service expanded the tornado warning to include all of Lee County, including the entire city of Auburn. It will remain in effect until 9:45 a.m.

Update: Around 9 a.m., the NWS confirmed a tornado on the ground just south of Auburn, trailing just south of Interstate 85.

Update: At 9:12 a.m., Auburn is in the clear. The NWS has canceled the tornado warning that included Auburn. The severe weather threat is over for this first round of weather. More severe weather is expected tonight.


The Birmingham National Weather Service has issued a tornado warning for portions of Lee, Elmore, Cossa, Tallapoosa and Macon Counties.

The warning polygon covers areas of Auburn west of South Donahue Drive and north of South College Street, including portions of Auburn's main campus.

The warning will remain in effect until 9:15 a.m.

Small spin-up tornadoes are possible in the warning area. The tornadoes could damage property, especially vehicles, roofs and mobile homes. Those without shelter could be injured.

"SEEK SHELTER immediately in the nearest shelter area or lowest level of the nearest building, away from outside doors and windows," Auburn University Emergency Management said. "Stay in the shelter area until the warning expires. Stay tuned to local weather for more information."

The Birmingham National Weather Service issued a tornado watch including Lee County and most other areas of central and south Alabama earlier this morning.

The watch will remain in effect until 11 a.m., according to the NWS.

Multiple rounds of severe weather are expected in the Auburn area between Saturday and Sunday mornings, including this round.
