Severe weather possible in the Auburn area Monday

Several rounds of severe weather are likely this week for the Auburn area, with the first round of severe weather predicted for midday on Monday.

Strong tornadoes, damaging winds up to 70 mph and quarter-sized hail are likely Monday, according to the Birmingham National Weather service. The risk of heavy rain and severe thunderstorms is certain, the NWS said.

Auburn is included in a "moderate" risk area, the NWS's second-highest threat level. Storms could impact the area beginning at 11 a.m. and could last until 2 p.m. The storms will begin moving across Alabama from west to east beginning at about 5 a.m.

The line of storms producing the severe weather has churned out several strong tornadoes to our west, including one in Louisiana Sunday morning that killed a mother and her 3-year-old daughter. Their mobile home was ripped off its foundation.

The National Weather Service has advised residents to stay aware of severe weather conditions throughout the day Monday. The University will open storm shelters if a tornado watch is issued in the Auburn area.

A second round of severe weather is likely on Wednesday. Auburn is currently included in an enhanced risk area for the weather on Wednesday. There is substantial uncertainty about the situation on Wednesday, the NWS said, but more details will be available after the storms on Monday.
